At 37, Aishwarya is a director’s delight

Aishwarya

For most leading ladies in tinsel town, their career takes a downfall after they touch 30. But certainly not in the case of Aishwarya Rai, who continues to flourish in Bollywood as she turns 37 Monday and has two mega projects – “Action Replayy” and “Guzaarish” – lined up for release.
The former beauty queen has come a long way from being crowned Miss World in 1994, to working in Tamil films, moving to Bollywood and finally topping it up with international fame through movie projects as well as attending prestigious foreign film festivals.
But all through her 13-year film career, filmmakers feel she has remained a director’s delight, and is here to stay for a long time to come.
“Aishwarya always followed me during the shooting of ‘Taal’, and is a complete director’s actor. I’m proud she has evolved so much as an actor. She is giving good performances, she has achieved international fame, and she is leading a happy married life – what else can she ask for from life? But she is as grounded as ever,” filmmaker Subhash Ghai said.
The director, who worked with Aishwarya in 1999, says the actress will “definitely be in Bollywood for another 10 years” and is looking forward to associating with her once again.
Ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who gave Aishwarya’s career a big push with “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” followed by “Devdas”, says she is a timeless beauty.
“Aishwarya is my muse, my jaan and I get terribly excited when I make a film with her because she is very, very special. Some people are timeless and Aishwarya will be there for another 20 years,” said Bhansali, whose third project with the actress, “Guzaarish”, releases Nov 19.
Aishwarya, who married actor Abhishek Bachchan in 2007, has broken the notion that married actresses discontinue their film careers… and her husband is proud of her.
“I feel great about Aishwarya’s achievements, I’m very proud of her. Whatever adulation she has got, she truly deserves it. I’m happy that she broke the notion that women can’t work after marriage. Why are we so regressive in our thinking? If she wants to work, her audience wants to see her, what is people’s problem? I as a husband am very happy that she is doing so well. I think she is doing better work now,” Abhishek had said.
Aishwarya started acting in 1997 with Tamil film “Iruvar”, followed by her Bollywood debut in the same year opposite Bobby Deol in “Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya” – both of which flopped.
But the next year, she won her first Filmfare Best Actress award South for Tamil film “Jeans”. She also bagged the Filmfare Best Actress Award for Bhansali’s “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”.
She gave a power-packed performance in “Taal”, but then delivered a string of duds like “Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai”(2000), “Dhai Akshar Prem Ke”(2000), “Albela” (2001), “Hum Kisise Kum Nahi”(2001).
But it was Bhansali’s “Devdas” that resurrected her career and fetched her another Filmfare award in the Best Actress category.
She also gave good performances in “Chokher Bali”(2002), “Raincoat” (2004), “Guru”(2006), “Dhoom 2″, “Provoked”(2007), “Jodhaa Akbar” (2008) and “Sarkar Raj” (2008). She recently featured in Mani Ratnam’s “Raavan” and opposite superstar Rajnikanth in “Robot”.
Some of her English projects include “Bride & Prejudice” (2003), “Mistress of Spices”, “The Last Legion” (2007) and “Pink Panther”.
According to a 2009 Forbes list, Aishwarya Rai is India’s most bankable star in Hollywood, and is also counted among the 100 most beautiful women in the world.
She has been attending many international film festivals and was also the first Indian actress to be on the jury of the Cannes Film Festival in 2003.
Now she is gearing up for the release of “Action Replayy” on Diwali and “Guzaarish”, and is busy promoting them. But she hopes to spend some time with her family as she steps into her new year.

Rohit Shetty plans an action film after “Golmaal 3″

Rohit-Shetty

After tickling funny bones of audiences with comedies like “Golmaal”, “Golmaal Returns” and “All The Best”, director Rohit Shetty plans to make an action film.
“Yes, I would surely make an action film, sometime in the next year,” said Shetty whose debut movie “Zameen” was an action thriller as well.
The filmmaker is gearing up for the release of “Golmaal 3″ Friday, which holds the promise of a laugh riot, just like the previous two instalments.
Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor,Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Khemu and Mithun Chakraborty form the cast of the movie.
“Mithun is a great actor and a great performer. He is doing comedy after a very long time. His character in ‘Golmaal’ is such that you will fall in love with him,” said Shetty.

Lindsay Lohan allows dad to meet her

Lindsay Lohan

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan has decided to let her father Michael Lohan see her as she is sick of his repeated public requests to allow him visit her in rehab.
The 'Machete' actress, who is presently undergoing treatment for drug abuse at the Betty Ford Clinic in California believes that by meeting her father she will be able to stop his repeated public pleas to see her, reported Femalefirst.
"It's gotten to the point where Lindsay told Dina, 'Mommy, maybe I should just let him see me because then he'll go away and he'll stop," a source said.
However, the 24-year-old star has become infuriated with her dad after he was caught on camera attending reality TV star Tila Tequila's recent 29th birthday party, despite his promise to stay out of the spotlight.
"Lindsay does know about her dad going to Tila's birthday bash. She does hear things even though she's in rehab. How would you feel if this was your dad? She's humiliated. Her feeling is, how dare Michael say he wants to make closure when he does something like that? He preaches 'people, places, things' but his actions are a total contradiction. He says he wants to mend fences, and then he goes to this girl's birthday," the source added.

BJP threatens actor who plays gay lover

BJP's youth wing storms into actor Kapil Sharma's residence protesting against bold scenes in Dunno Y...Na Jaane Kyun

Actor Kapil Sharma
The release of Dunno Y...Na Jaane Kyun, a film about gay romance, has been postponed from October 29 to November 6 due to security concerns. A mob from the BJP's youth wing stormed into actor Kapil Sharma's Khar residence on October 25, demanding a pre-release ban on the film for its gay lovemaking scenes. Incidentally, the actor is also the film's director Sanjay Sharma's brother. The film is said to have explicit kissing scenes.

Actor Sharma says, "Initially touching another guy felt awkward. After the kiss, my co-star Yuvraaj and I couldn't look at each other for hours."

Recalling the incident, the actor says the situation was a tense one even after police arrived to pacify the protesters. "Everybody at home was anxious. No one was allowed in or out of our compound. The police arrested a few of the protesters, but I am worried. I hope the film sees a release." The actor has lodged a police complaint against the protesters and requested for special security until the release of the film.

"I got three threats via email, warning us against releasing the film." The filmmaker is now planning to arrange for security measures in theatres, fearing an attack.

Lead actor and model Yuvraaj Parasher, who also plays a gay lover in the film says his family has ostracised him. The film's cast includes Zeenat Aman, Helen and Kabir Bedi. These stars also seem to have distanced themselves from the project.

Says Sharma, "Zeenatji was a part of a couple of media events. But she's a bit media shy." Sharma refused to comment on the other cast members' absence from the publicity.

The censors have not been too kind either. "They have cut 50  per cent of the lovemaking scenes, and rear nudity," he laments.

The film as been shot in English and Hindi versions.

Filmmaker Jagmoham Mundhra says he couldn't take his eyes off the onscreen couple. While gay activists Manvendra Singh Gohil and Ashok Row Kavi have given the film a thumbs-up, conservative parties are wary of the film's liberal look at homosexual love. Despite the controversy, the actor says, "This is the first gay love story, and it's more than just a story about homosexuality."

Rakhi summoned for Insaaf

City lawyer files PIL; demands that reality show Rakhi Ka Insaaf be banned as it insults the judiciary

Rakhi Ka Insaaf, a pop court show on television, may soon have to appear in court. The show hosted by Rakhi Sawant that airs on Imagine TV, has run into trouble after a city-based lawyer approached the Bombay High Court and filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) pleading that the show be taken off air.

Advocate Sushan Kunjuraman has said that the show contains "objectionable behaviour" by Rakhi Sawant. He added that it was also a mockery of the judiciary.

The PIL was filed on October 21. "The show is highly objectionable and an unpardonable mockery of law and justice, judges, litigants and their relatives, police machinery, woman welfare associations and courts of law," observed Kunjuraman, who is also a human rights activist. The PIL that is likely to come up for hearing within a couple of weeks, states that the show "should be banned immediately."

The advocate added, "It is not a justice court; it is only a commercial court, which has been created at the cost of a common man. We have provided a copy to the chairperson of the Censor Board, the producer of Imagine limited and to Rakhi Sawant," he added.

A spokesperson of Imagine channel said that they had not received a copy of the PIL and hence could not comment.

Excerpts from the PIL
Rakhi Sawant (allegedly) used foul language during the show while referring to a person providing for his child. She said, "Insaan ko bhook lagta hai toh sab seekh leta hai... mere bacche aur mere peth mein bhook hai... jisko mein ne paida kiya hai... jisko khaana nahi milta...  woh agarbatti kya... dusre ka goo (faeces) bhi utha sakti hai.."
